If you do a search online for the best books on astrology, you are bound to get long lists of books that may or may not be helpful for you on your quest to learn the starting concepts of astrology.
When learning about astrology, it is helpful to have one go-to book on the subject to use as a reference. So many books have been written on the subject. You can find quite a few astrological books that delve deeper into charts, houses, and predictive astrology, but when you need one good resource that covers most of the concepts in an introductory way, that long list online may seem daunting.
A good beginning book has interpretations that are written in everyday language, is organized well, and has lots of interesting insights about how this knowledge may relate to you and your personal quest for learning more. To qualify for a permanent spot on the bookshelf, it should have sections with advanced astrology for that point in time when you are ready to go further.
There are three good books overall that offer an introduction to astrology.
Parker's Astrology
Parker's Astrology by Julia & Derek Parker is a bestseller and favorite for many because of its wonderful images. In addition to being full of concise information, it is a colorful picture book. The book begins with the history of astrology, an overview of the solar system and then introduces the foundational concepts. The essence of each aspect of astrology is captured well along with artful illustrations and photo collages on every page.
The book includes a section on how to cast your own birth chart. There is also a user-friendly planetary aspect finder in the back, and astrological tables to use to look up your natal planets.
The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need
The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk lives up to its title. Woolfolk's writing is inviting. Her writing style evokes feeling like she is sharing her notes from one friend to another. She includes thought-provoking insights.
This book has in-depth profiles of all the sun signs, and goes further to discuss the other celestial bodies like the moon and planets. Her book is full of gems of generally accepted astrological beliefs, especially in the area of love and romance. The book ventures into history, myth, birth chart interpretation and more, and steers clear of becoming too technical or esoteric as it gets into more complex topics.
Astrology for Yourself
Astrology for Yourself by Douglas Block and Demetra George is an introduction to astrology and a workbook for understanding your own birth chart. It is for someone that is prepared to take a more contemplative approach. This book expertly guides you toward a full understanding of your birth chart.
The authors taught astrology and know how to introduce the topic step-by-step. This workbook is ideal for those who are looking to develop their own interpretations. The basic qualities of the signs and planets are given, and the book includes a space for personal insights, as well as journal entries.
If you want to use astrology to understand yourself and others, you need to know the astrological basics and what they represent: the 12 signs of the zodiac; the Sun, the Moon, and the planets; and the 12 houses of the horoscope.
Signs of the Zodiac: Symbols, Dates, Traits, and Planetary Rulers
What’s your sign? A zodiac sign is the portion of the zodiac occupied by the Sun at the moment of your birth. Because the Sun resides in each sign of the zodiac for about a month, those signs are also known as Sun signs. The following table shows the 12 Sun signs — along with their astrological symbols, their dates, the essential traits associated with them, and their planetary rulers:

Astrology: Planetary Symbols and Influences
Astrology holds that the Sun, the Moon, and the planets represent different facets of who you are and express their energies through the signs that they occupy in your birth chart. This table shows the astrological symbol for each of those celestial bodies (plus the Nodes of the Moon and the asteroid Chiron) and what it represents.
Astrological Houses and What They Mean
Just as the band of sky where the Sun, the Moon, and the planets can be found is divided into 12 signs, an astrological chart is divided into 12 houses. Each astrological house influences different areas of your life, as shown in this table:
House | Area of Influence |
---|---|
First House | Appearance, outward personality |
Second House | Money, possessions, values |
Third House | Communication, immediate environment, brothers and sisters |
Fourth House | Home, parents, roots, circumstances at the end of life |
Fifth House | Romance, children, creativity, fun |
Sixth House | Work, health, service |
Seventh House | Marriage and other partnerships |
Eighth House | Sex, death, regeneration, other people’s money |
Ninth House | Higher education, travel, religion, philosophy, publishing, law |
Tenth House | Career, status, reputation |
Eleventh House | Friends, groups, goals, aspirations |
Twelfth House | Seclusion, secrets, spirituality, self-sabotage, institutions |
